Rag Quilt Instructions

Grammy | May 27, 2009

Without a doubt, the easiest quilt to make is a rag quilt. Fuss-free, is what I call it as it  goes together quickly and it’s that shabby chic look that I love. I have seen many rag quilts I like, including this shabby chic rag quilt, but how to make one is the question I get asked often.

I could write out a long blog post on how to do it, but I found these awesome instructions on how to create a rag quilt in a weekend. Perfect!

So here ya go.

I Long for a Quilting Bee

Grammy | May 26, 2009

7707_quilting_bee_jigsaw_puzzle_lg I have been searching for a local group of ladies to quilt with, like an old-fashioned quilting bee. So far, not much luck finding anything like that close to me. I have one friend who quilts, but other commitments prevent us from being able to quilt together much. Honestly, my friend and I have discussed this and she is wanting something like this too. It may be that she and I will just have to find the time in our schedules to get together to quilt. We’ll just make our own Quilting Bee!

What Happened to the Quilting Bee?

But I have to wonder, what in the world happened to the old fashioned quilting bee. Is it our busy lifestyles, a move away from hand-crafts in general, too many electronic entertainment distractions – or perhaps a combination of all of those things – that caused us to lose this friendship social gathering ritual?

I like the idea of sitting down with a group of friends, working with our hands on a quilt, creating, talking, laughing… I know they have quilting guilds that have meetings, is that the same thing; or are those ‘meetings’? I don’t want a meeting, I want an informal social quilting bee.

Am I the only one that misses quilting bees? Do you have a quilting bee where you live? Or even a friend or two that you get together to quilt with?

Infant Suggler Baby Quilt Pattern

Infant Snuggler Baby Quilt Pattern

Free Baby Quilt Patterns

Every baby deserves their own quilt, at least one new quilt. With the arrival of my newest grandbaby, and short on time, I was tempted to put together a rag quilt. However, I just found this free quilt pattern this uses scraps of flannel that is quick, easy and could be modified to be ‘ragged’ if I wanted.

I love the bright and bold colors used in their sample quilt shown in the image to the left, which I think is perfect for babies. However, what would also be lovely is to use scraps of fabric from your own child’s baby clothing and incoporate that into this quilt as well. So it would be part memory quilt and part scrap quilt: quite fitting when you think that a baby is a blending of two people and two families. I really like the idea of this for a baby quilt.
